"Slice"

Slice is a collection of various pieces that are selected due to their interesting shape or form. The collection that is still in the process of being completed uses several special techniques to capture the forms and surface composition of each object. The information is then passed through special algorithms to help make a unique layer that when joined to its neighbouring layers gives an impression of the original surface found on the originating object. The reassembled pieces are only a suggestion of the original form and because of this the observers brain makes the rest of the connection to allow an understanding of what the original object was with varying amounts of detail.

The pieces exhibit an additional visual interest when the observer looks parallel to the surface. It is when this happens at certain angles a part of the piece being observed allows the viewer to look completely through the structure to the other side. This effect removes even more detail making object appear vacant in certain orientations and gives a sense of openness. When returning to a different vantage point the object “rebuilds” itself to how it appeared before. Each piece is made from 100% reconstituted wood.

“Slice” is an ongoing collection with further works being added to it. “Brown Paper Bag” a sculpture from the slice collection was featured in the Victoria Gallery, Bath in 2017 as part of the Bath Society of Artists annual open exhibition. It has since been sold to a private collector.

"Glance"

“Glance” consists of two heads that are around three times the size of an original head, standing nearly half a metre tall. The two subjects look intensely at each other, the smiles and other facial expressions being suggested through the layers of solid wood. When the pieces are viewed at eye level the observer/viewer can see that actually each head is look straight through its partner, giving the feeling of vacancy or transparency, this can be seen in the Video on the next slide. “Glance” is the latest work in the “Slice” collection and is made from 100% reconstituted wood. “Glance” was exhibited at the 2019 “Bath Society of Artists Open Exhibition” at the Victoria Gallery, Bath.

Video of “Glance” showing how the two opposing heads change in shape and appearance towards one another when the observer changes their viewing position. The “finale” being that whilst they look lovingly towards each other, at eye level they appear to look straight through each other. The glance of the observer at this position allows a view straight through each head.

"Brown Paper Bag"

"Brown Paper Bag" stands over half a metre tall and consists of over 100 different layers or reconstituted wood to recreate the shape of a bag. The softness of the creases and folds of the bag are captured and then recreated in each layer of solid wood. The colour and shape give a sense of softness and warmth which is the opposite to its material of solid wood. The darkened edges add to enhance the shape and contours of the piece. Each layer is separated by a gap to allow the viewer to see through the entire piece. When looking up and down, the viewer can see different parts of the sculpture becoming transparent, making it look even softer than its original form. "Brown Paper Bag" was exhibited during the 2017 "Bath Society of Artist's" open exhibition at Victoria Art Gallery in Bath. It has since been sold to a private collector.

“Crowd-pleaser” is an exact replica of the head of Tom Zanetti, an international platinum selling DJ. The head is four times the size and constructed in layers of solid acrylic. The piece was done in collaboration with Tom through a series of 3D scans of his actual head using multiple cameras and then pieced together by the artist. The piece is completely transparent normally. But will transmit light of varying colours through it’s acrylic layers using total internal reflection if it senses any sound or vibration.

The colour and intensity of the light depend on what the head “hears” or “feels”. Every light emission as completely unique as every input. The head will respond differently to a child’s voice vs an adults or another child’s voice for that matter.

It continuously creates its own art based on its audience or surroundings by using an embedded microphone and computer. The video in the following slide is of the head responding to the voice of the shipping forecast played from a Radio. It will however respond to any noise, even a machine such as a ticking clock or a mobile phone and as such can allow another machine to create art. It is scheduled to be used by “Sony” in the creation of the next music videos.

The piece is designed to reflect the life and work of world famous DJ Tom Zanetti. Tom’s life is a continual journey of Gig after Gig, travelling to different clubs in different countries every week. This hectic life and interaction with huge crowds and so many different people is reflected by the way the piece responds to any sound or vibration by changing colour through light in a unique way, therefore “pleasing” the crowd or observer that is within its vicinity, with seemingly no loss of energy.

If there is no sound the piece turns completely transparent, thus depicting how quiet, empty and sometimes lonely “down time” can seem compared to the norm.
